 Choosing the right piano

Here is an outline of the most important factors to consider when buying a piano. We can explain and demonstrate these more fully when you visit the shop.

TONE

"I was very impressed by overall approach – particularly toning to my requirements before having to make a selection + wide range to try out when making a choice"

The tone of pianos can vary in many subtle ways. Each make tends to have its own character and customers are often surprised when they hear the difference. The initial comparison is usually between clear and bright or more warm and mellow, but there are many other aspects to appreciate. It is important to compare the tones for yourself so you can choose the sound you find most pleasing.

Tone can also be adjusted by our voicing preparation and we take your own comments into account when we do this. By helping you select the right make and then voicing it for you, we can make sure the piano sounds just as you like it.

TOUCH

Pianos also vary in their keyboard characteristics. They can have a firmer or lighter touch and different levels of response. It is important to try the piano, if you can, to find the touch you like best. Again, when we adjust the piano, we can take your preference into account.

QUALITY

With many pianos now being imported and many made in the 'Far East', there is a great deal of variation in quality level. This is generally reflected in the price, but we do find that certain makes and models offer the best value within the different price bands.

It is complicated to make detailed comparisons of quality, but we constantly review this in our stock planning so you can rely on our knowledge and experience. We can offer further advice on quality differences if you wish and also help you relate this to your playing needs.

SIZE

The size of piano has a substantial effect on the sound. A larger piano gives more depth and volume, especially in the bass, and will also provide a greater range. This is very useful when playing at higher levels or if you like a really full sound, but the choice will also depend on how big your room is. We help you consider the most appropriate size and demonstrate what effect this can have.

CABINET

A piano is obviously a large piece of furniture as well as an instrument, so it is important for it to complement and enhance your home. There are several styles of cabinet and many wood colours and finishes, all of which can make a huge difference to how the piano will look. We guide you through the options available to make sure the piano you choose really fits in well.
